What can IDP do for me?

IDP The first and only establishment owned by all Australian universities. IDP is Australia's independent international education and professional development organisation. We offer the following free services: comprehensive counseling, application processing, tuition fees receipting, enrolment and testing center for IELTS, preparation classes for IELTS, visa application, full processing on Australian twinning programs, accommodation and flight arrangements, airport-reception arrangements, & pre-departure briefing.

Can IDP recommend universities?

This would depend on your qualifications, results and courses you wish to apply to, as each institution has different entry requirements.

How do I apply to study in Australia and when are the intakes?

You must submit an application form for each institution with a complete set of certified academic transcripts. You can also apply online www.idp.com. Certification is free for students using IDP services. The Australian academic year begins in either January/February or July. However, some courses are available throughout the year. Students are encouraged to apply at least 2 or 3 months in advance to provide ample time to process student visa and to facilitate better planning.

Do I need a visa to enter Australia?

Yes you need to apply for a visa to study in Australia.

The application process can be carried out in two ways:

  1. You can apply directly to the Australian High Commission
  2. You can apply through an IDP Education Pty Ltd Office in Malaysia

You can apply for your visa utilising e-visa available through the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs website www.immi.gov.au

Please note:

  • Regardless of the method, please leave yourself adequate time for the processing of your visa.
  • Please read any application forms carefully and fill in all required sections thoroughly. Any discrepancy or blank space can delay processing considerably.

How do I choose a course?

Students can go to IDP Education Pty Ltd to consult the list of approved institutions and their courses. The Counselors will be able to give you information on all courses available to international students. Once an offer has been made and accepted, IDP Education Pty Ltd will then advise on the steps to be taken to obtain a student visa and advise on travel to Australia.

Which is the best university in Australia and which is the most popular?

Different universities excel in different areas. Popularity of the university depends on individual preferences and perceptions. Please consult one of our counselors for advice on the most appropriate university institution for your specific circumstances.

Is there a ranking of Australian universities?

No. This would depend on your qualifications, results and courses you wish to apply, as each institution has different entry requirements.

What does an Australian degree stand for?

All Australian degrees are established by an ACT of the Australian Parliament, which gives degrees from different universities the same standing. Unless the course is a Professional degree, there is no requirement for formal recognition by any professional body. Professional degrees include Architecture, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Law, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Optometry and Nursing.

How much advanced standing/credit exemptions will I get?

This depends on the particular university and the grades achieved in your previous studies. On average, 1 to 2 years of exemptions are given for an engineering course & 0.5 to 1.5 years for other courses.

How much does it cost to study in Australia?

Most courses cost between A$10,000 to A$33,000 per annum. Science and Engineering courses are from A$15,000 to A$23,000 per annum. While Medicine and Dentistry ranges from A$28,000 to A$33,000 per annum. Living expenses range from A$800 to A$1,500 per month, depending on individual lifestyles and standard of living in various states in Australia.

Is there a difference between distance learning and studying in Australia?

Yes. There is difference in availability of subjects and the cost of the program. However, the university moderates the standards of the course. Please check with prospective employers for preference.

Do I need my actual academic results to apply?

No. You can apply using your forecasted results.

Are the qualifications recognised in Malaysia?

In general, all Australian qualifications are recognised in Malaysia by the government and professional bodies. If you need further clarification about the qualifications, please contact the IDP Education Pty Ltd office nearest to you. Your Time in Australia

Am I allowed to work in Australia?

As an International student you are allowed to work 20 hours a week during term time and anywhere up to full time during term break.

However you must first apply for permission to work within Australia through the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs in Australia. You are reminded that you can only apply after you commence your studies within Australia.

Where can I find employment once in Australia?

The avenues for employment in Australia are abundant. You can start your search through some of the following avenues:

  • Your University Student Union
  • The employment section of newspapers in your state
  • Local employment agencies
  • Directly approaching store managers

What are my living options once in Australia?

You have several options for accommodation when in Australia. Please think carefully about the following living arrangements before deciding where you would like to live. Consider:

  • The environment you want to live in such as a smoking or non-smoking environment
  • The atmosphere that will allow you to excel in your studies such as a party or a more subdued atmosphere
  • Whether you would prefer to live within a family environment or independently

The primary living options once in Australia are:

  • (a) Homestay - This involves living with an Australian Family and the rents and facilities vary.
  • (b) Rented Apartments or Houses - This situation offers greater independence and ideal if you want to share with some friends and split the rent.
  • (c) University Hostels - This living option includes a small furnished room with a shared bathroom and other facilities. The rents and offerings vary.
  • (d) University campuses -This option is ideal for people who are living independently for the first time and want to be close to the university, its facilities and people.

What can't I bring to Australia with me?

Please consult the website www.aqis.gov.au for a detailed listing of items, but below are the primary restrictions:

  • Dairy, eggs and egg products
  • Live animals
  • Meat and meat products
  • Seeds and nuts
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Live plants
  • Salmon and trout products
  • Biological materials
  • Deer horn/velvet, edible birds, nest packaged products
  • Soil and sand

These restrictions are strictly enforced so as to preserve Australia's environment and habitat.
