Primary and Secondary Schools
There are over 15,000 international students enrolled at
Australian primary and secondary schools. Australian schools are
known to provide a standard and quality of education equal to the
best in the world.
The design of the school curriculum aims to fulfill the
intellectual, social, artistic, and career potential for each
student. Both the primary and secondary education encourage
community involvement and stress the importance of education and
training systems that provide a skilled and flexible workforce.
School attendance in Australia is compulsory for children
between the ages of 6 to 15. Nevertheless, children can begin
school even before they are 6 and stay on in school beyond 15 years
of age.

The school system can be divided into Primary school (Year 1 to
6) and Secondary school (Year 7 to 12).
Core curriculum subjects in primary schools are English,
Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Arts (including music, art,
craft and drama) and Health (including physical education and
personal development)
Senior secondary students, those in Year 11 and 12 will focus on
specific subjects depending on their ability, interest and
preferred career path.
School year for primary and secondary schools start from late
January or early February and runs through to early December. There
are four terms with each term lasting up to 12 weeks.
Overseas students need to be tested for English language
proficiency prior to entry.
